Tax Manager

Novacap is looking for a Tax Manager to join the Finance team. Working in close collaboration with internal accountants and external consultants, this role will participate in and help supervise all activities related to tax planning, compliance, and controversy matters

Summary of the functions

The Tax Manager is responsible for the following:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the firm’s management and investment funds structures to execute and supervise all tax related matters. This includes companies, holding companies, partnerships, trusts, etc.

Tax compliance:

  • Participate in and help review domestic/international federal and multi-state tax returns and reporting, and ensure compliance with government standards in Canada, U.S. and internationally.
  • Lead through high quality and timely results the completion of regulatory obligations in various jurisdictions.
  • Research, understand and document tax planning and compliance subject matters.

Indirect Tax:

  • Participate in and help review voluntary disclosures, filings, and provisions for accounting/audit purposes.
  • Communicate with regulatory agencies and coordinate with external consultants when required to resolve issues.
  • Research, understand and apply legislations for relevant regions, as applicable.
  • Ensure high quality and timely HST/GST compliance and filings of HST/GST returns, including documentation for potential sales tax audit purposes.


  • Organize and maintain tax records and payments.
  • Compute actual and forecasted taxes owed and prepare necessary workpapers for tax payments and returns.
  • Collect and organize supporting documentation in order to respond to tax notices, assist with tax examinations, as well as correspond, and inform relevant persons in response to specific queries from regulatory bodies.
  • Contact tax authorities where necessary and assist during audits, including additional representations and preparing notices of objection, as applicable.

Transfer Pricing:

  • Participate in and help prepare transfer pricing documentation.

Other : 

  • Maintain high quality control over accuracy and completeness of analysis and information, leveraging in-depth tax technical knowledge in providing feedback to colleagues.
  • Prepare various government remittances such as income tax installments and withholding taxes on payments to non-residents.
  • Prepare and maintain records including FATCA documentation, FBAR reports, etc.
  • Stay current on new tax development and apply knowledge of the Canadian Income Tax Act and other relevant legislations. Maintain high level of technical skills and effectively apply tax knowledge.
  • Participate and assist in overseeing multiple tax advisory projects and ongoing applications drawing on tax expertise to meet ad hoc business needs

Liaise and correspond professionally with colleagues, external parties, and the firm leadership team:

Internal relations:

  • Fund Accounting, Corporate, Investment Team, Management, etc.

External relations:

  • Tax advisors specialized in following fields: Canadian Corporate Tax, U.S. Corporate Tax, Indirect Tax Services, German Tax compliance, Transfer Pricing, M&A, etc.


  • 5+ of relevant tax experience in an accounting firm, including Canadian corporate tax, US corporate tax, compliance or relevant equivalent
  • An accounting degree or other related education relevant to an area of specialization
  • Active CPA license
  • Experience in asset management industry and/or partnership taxation considered a plus
  • Bilingual, excellent French and English (written and spoken)
  • Advanced in Microsoft Office suite: Teams, Excel, Power Point.
  • Proficiency with Tax Prep considered a plus
