Novacap was founded in 1981. From the start, Novacap invested in both technology companies and middle-market traditional industries. From 1981 to 1999, Novacap invested in 31 companies and made over 50 additional acquisitions to fuel the growth of its portfolio companies via its first evergreen fund, Novacap Investments Inc.
In 2000, the firm raised Novacap II, Limited Partnership with $210 million in committed capital. The fund went on pursuing the same investment strategy investing in both middle market traditional industries and technology companies. Novacap II invested in 18 companies, 9 industrial companies and 9 technology companies and made an additional 10 add-on acquisitions through its portfolio companies.
In 2007, Novacap established two new funds, one for each of its investment groups. Novacap Technologies III, Limited Partnership (Novacap Technologies III) was established to take advantage of significant investment opportunities in the Information and Communication Technologies ("ICT") sector in Eastern Canada. Novacap Industries III, Limited Partnership (Novacap Industries III) was established to invest in North American middle market companies representing niche market leaders in their field.
